I am currently an Academic Success Coach at Middle Georgia State University (MGA) with a background in Information Technology and tutoring. I have been with MGA since 2017 when I was hired as an Academic Support Specialist. In my former role, I assisted the Student Success Center (SSC) Coordinator in daily operations of the SSC and provided tutoring in my area of expertise. I have a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, with concentrations in Networking and Information Assurance (Information Security), and a Master's degree in Information Technology, with a concentration in Digital Forensics. In additional to tutoring course content for IT and core courses, I also provided assistance with APA and MLA formatted papers, Website and Brightspace/D2L navigation, Microsoft Office, and general tech related issues and questions.
As an Academic Success Coach, I perform outreach to students that may be struggling along their academic journey. Target students include probation students, learning support students, and any student that may be struggling in their courses. In this role, I act as a life coach for students in an academic setting. I provide tips and strategies related to academic performance as well as general life tips for students who are just beginning to spread their wings and take responsibility for their life's journey. Additionally, I help plan and conduct workshops and panel discussions, as well as Student Success Festivals and other related events. I also help provide Student Success Center presence at general campus events, such as orientation and student organization expos.
Beyond my specific job duties at Middle Georgia State University, I often assist faculty and staff members throughout the MGA community. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I assisted The Writing Center in transitioning from face-to-face tutoring to fully online tutoring. I built out an online schedule and provided remote training for The Writing Center staff and consultants as well as ongoing support with schedule updates, new staff training, and technology issues. Similarly, I provided training for the Math Academic Resource Center staff, although they ultimately chose to implement their schedule independently. Post-COVID, I was in on the ground floor of the Student Success Center's embedded tutoring program and was embedded in numerous classes with several different professors. I also regularly volunteer at our commencement ceremonies scanning tickets, directing traffic, and being among the first faces that guests see when arriving at these very special events.
